The Search for True Moral Authority Essay - 2210 Words

In reading The Peloponnesian War by Thucydides, one is struck by the two major political education ideals described in the book: the Spartan regime, praised by the Lacedaemonian king Archidamus, and the Athenian ideal, supported by Pericles, the Athenian ruler. Socrates discusses both of these regimes in Plato’s Republic in an attempt to make a statement about what constitutes true and effective education. After close analysis, it is clear that Socrates does not support either educational ideal. Instead, Socrates rejects both regimes—the Athenian because it has no real guidance and thus cannot produce wise and just people, and the Spartan because despite all its rigidity, it still does not truly train people to be wise and just. In†¦show more content†¦In The Republic, Socrates shows that both of these ancient regimes are insufficient modes of education. He begins by proposing that the ideal ruling situation for a city would be that all the desires in the commo n many are mastered by the desires and the prudence in the more decent few (Plato 4.431c-d).2 These more decent few, the guardians, are responsible for the education of the people in the city, picking those who are best from all the classes and educating them to live a life with rigorous boundaries (as exemplified by the treatment of what types of music and poetry the students should be exposed to) under the control of those in charge and without any say in their ways of life (Plato 3.415a-c). Their family, their education, and their occupation are all subsumed and manifested by the state. So it seems at first that Socrates considers the Spartan regime instead of the Athenian to be the correct way to raise people. But Socrates points out that even a leader reared in the Spartan regime is susceptible to corruption. In a discussion with Glaucon, Socrates says that even if the guardians could be raised in such strict ways, that education would still not guarantee that they would not become corrupt: And wouldn’t they have been provided with the greatest safeguard [against corruption and wrongdoing] if they have been really finely educated? [I asked.] But they have been, he said. And I said, It’s not fitShow MoreRelatedThe origin of piety956 Words   |  4 Pages The moral code of a society is established by many different factors. The situational leadership theory focuses on the best leadership styles to address organization changes even in small business environment. This theory said that a leader must select the right styles and the follower must mature to accept responsible for their behavior while the organization is going through changes. This theory has two variables that will help to address the changes in the organization. The first variable is task behaviors, is the degree to which follower have the appropriate job knowledge and skills and their need for less or more guidance and direction (Hughes et al, 2015, p. 534). According to the book, this behavior tell employee what to do, how to do it, when to do it, and who is to do it. The task behaviors are equivalent to the readiness of follower so in Situational Leadership Model, (S1, telling) mean the follower need a lot of direction from the leader (Hughes et al, 2015, p. 535). In the selling quadrant (S2), the follower lacks the skill to be able to succeed during this situation. Competences Of Sustainable Construction â€Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Competences Of Sustainable Construction? Answer: Introducation Leadership encompasses a research area that involves practical skill regarding the individuals ability to lead other individuals or an entire organization. There are various viewpoints regarding leadership- Eastern and Western approach. The academic environments in US put down the definition of leadership as social influence where a person can help other people in achieving a particular task. From a European perspective, it is held that a leader cannot be moved with the help of any communitarian goal but by the use of personal power. The idea of leadership is based on individual quality and can be termed as trait theory of leadership. Talent, skills and physical characteristics are the three attributes that propel a person to the position of power (Bavik et al. 2017). A good leader is integral to the success of an organization and their main objective is to ensure stability in a ever-changing world. The best leaders knows that change is inevitable and they are flexible in their way o f working. Once upon a time leaders used to believe that strict control was necessary for the effective running of an organization. A rigid organizational hierarchy makes some people feel empowered whereas it makes the people who are at the bottom feel weak and unprivileged. Old assumptions regarding power is not valid in todays world. Control and rigidity does not produce good results and only creates an atmosphere of fear. An effective leader shares power with other people and searches ways that would increase the brainpower of an organization and keeps everyone engaged in an organization (Carnes, Houghton and Ellison 2015). He sees to it that everyone is committed within the organizational structure. An ideal leader is not a controller but will act as a facilitator who would help other people to do their best and remove the obstacles and giving people what they need. It will also provide learning opportunity and help in providing feedback. The financial basis relevant to todays economy lays more stress on information as compared to the asset of land and building (Daft 2014). Human capital in todays world is becoming more important and it increases the power in regard to the employees. According to Israeli president Shimon Peres idea is becoming more important as compared to the materials. In yesteryears when a worker used to work for eight hours within a day then the traditional system of control used to work but in todays world success relies to a large extent on the intellectual capacity of the workers. The role of a leader is to enable people so that they carry out their power in the effective manner. Vineet Nayar who is the CEO of HCL Technologies has said that they shifted the policy of the company and used to give more importance to the employees instead of the customers (Finkelstein, Costanza and Goodwin 2017). He made these relevant changes when the company was losing some of their best employees in the hands of their competitors. It proved to be highly effecti ve and paved the path for the empowerment of employees. Social media has blurred boundaries within an organization and created a hyperconnected world. Collaboration takes the lead in this kind of world instead of competition. Those leaders who are successful makes use of ideas and talent from different kinds of boundaries. Some companies provides encouragement to internal competition however those leaders who are successful put more emphasis on teamwork and co-operation. Those teams that are self-directed are instrumental in spreading knowledge within an organization. Effective leaders also collaborate with suppliers, customers and universities (Fleming and Spicer 2014). A trend is gradually growing that companies conceive of themselves as a team together and create value jointly instead of thinking of themselves as autonomous entities that is engaging itself in a competition with that of others. Collaboration creates the path for great challenges in the area of leadership as compared to the old concept that revolved around the concept of competition. Leaders should be able to develop their collaborative mindset and they should create an environment that facilitates teamwork and fosters the elements of mutual support. Leaders know how to open the lines of communication and they use their influence instead of that of authority. They take such steps that would stop harmful politics and know how to surge things in the forward direction. Most of the organizations in todays world is built on the assumption of uniformity and specialization. People who think along the same lines are grouped together into a particular department. Homogenous groups find it a lot easier to communicate and understand the needs of one another. However, uniform thinking can prove to be a disaster in rapidly growing world that is becoming more diverse everyday. Diversity in an organization can attract human talent and help in developing the mindset of an organization. The significance of diversity within the workforce is immense and proves to be an important contributing factor for the growth of firm. (Galanaki and Papalexandris 2017). Employees of different age and ethnic background can bring their distinctive perspective to the workforce and the different experiences helps the firm to work in a better manner. Another shift in the workplace can be seen in the shift of the position of leader from that of hero to that of the hardworking leader who works behind the scene and plays a crucial role in building a strong company. An ideal leader supports others instead of boasting about his own abilities and success (Tremblay 2017). Management organizes a structure in order to achieve a plan and fills up the structure with a lot of employees. It develops policies and procedures that would help in directing the employees and monitor different implementation tools (Hollander 2013). Leadership on the other hand is concerned with the communication of vision and in helping to develop a shared culture and core values that would be able to lead the future state. The vision lays bare the destination and the values prove to be of great help in defining the journey so that everyone moves along the same direction. Leadership should provide such learning ability that will help people to broaden their minds and so that people can take up responsibility for their deeds (Garcia et al. 2014). An ideal leader will always encourage and inspire people so that they get motivated to pursue the right path. The employees in turn find new ways that would help them to meet their goal. The difference brings to light a logical management against that of a leadership approach. Management lays emphasis on getting the best results out of the people in order to achieve the production goals. Services are given to customers taking into consideration the time factor. Leadership lays stress in investing in people so that they become energized to achieve their target. Management is based on formal authority but leadership is rather dependent on trust along with that of personal influence (Rupprecht et al. 2016). In case of an authority relationship both the person in the commanding position and that of the subordinate agree to the fact that the higher authority can instruct the employee to start working from 7.30 am otherwise his wages will be deducted. Leadership will not use force but it will rely on influence. Leadership would attract people and motivate them with the help of purpose (Tabassi et al. 2016). Concept of leadership has undergone evolution over time. Leadership is a reflection of larger society and different theories act as attitudes and help in understanding the larger world. (Gleditsch, Cederman and Wucherpfennig 2017). There are six approaches that are that of the Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Behaviour Theory, Contingency Theory, Influence Theory and Relational Theories. The earliest times had a notion that admired the concept of heroic leadership along with the natural abilities that spoke of power. In the words of the trait theory, an ideal leader should have energy that would separate them from that of non-leaders. It was held that if the traits were identified then the action of the leaders could be predicted along such a line. In the 1950s emphasis was laid on the actions of leader as compared to who he was. It emphasized what the leaders did while being on the job like that of management activities. The study focused on how the effective leaders could be set apa rt from the ones who were ineffective. The Contingency theory considered the situational variables that had a great influence on leadership behaviours (Hollander 2013). Contingency theory held that leaders could analyse a situation and change their behavior in order to improve the effectiveness of leadership. Influence theories laid focus on charismatic leadership that relies to a great extent on the unique personality of leader. The relational theories focused on how leader and follower interacted with each other. An important aspect of leadership revolves around that of interpersonal relationship. Emotional intelligence is an important quality that a leader should have and takes into consideration ones personal courage (Mao et al.2017). Leadership influence and change and takes account of personal responsibility so that things happen. Leadership can be defined as a relationship between that of leaders and followers who want to bring about real changes that will reflect their shared purpose. The changing world wants a new concept of leadership. New reality wants the shift from that of stability to that of change and from that of control to that of empowerment (Long et al. 2016). The leadership soft skills complement that of the hard skills in relation to that of management. Both leadership and management is integral for the successful running of an organization. Leadership and management depict two different process. Management tries in maintaining of stability within an organization, leadership on the other hand is instrumental in creating a vision for coming future. It designs the social architecture that can shape the culture (Morrison 2014). A research has pointed out that that a positive outlook is an extremely important trait in a leader and cheerful attitude is integral in case of effective leadership. I have deduced from the pioneering work of Daft on The Leadership Experience that an ideal leader in todays world would not depend on control and rigidity. He knows how important sharing power is and he will act as the facilitator within the workforce. Idea is held to be more important as compared to that of material in the complex world of today. I learnt that within an organization how important it is to conceive the employees as being more important as compared to that of the customers. It is the employees who accounts to a great deal for the profit of an organization and proves to be crucial for the annual turnover of a company. I learnt the significance of collaboration and that a leader will be more effective if he is hard working instead of being held as the hero who just carries an aura about him. His actions will set an example within the organization and his subordinates will be able to follow in his footsteps and work for the organization. He should be able to support othe rs and not boast about his achievements. He should not be vainglorious but rather set a noble example in the organization that will inspire others to emulate him. By achieving these yardstick, a leader will be truly successful and will be able to create such changes in the company that will surely prove to be crucial for the company in the long run. A great leader knows how to invest in people and will follow the relational theory. I learnt that an ideal leader would be able to steer the company toward change rather than stability. He will not try to control but will try to empower other people. The soft skills in relation to leadership should be able to complement the hard skills of management. I think that the most important trait of leadership would be to create such a vision that would inspire others to perform in a better manner. Underground Railroad Persuasive Essay Example For Students

Underground Railroad Persuasive Essay Underground RailroadI know youre wondering, what railroad? Well the simple fact is that everybody has heard of the Underground Railroad, but not everyone knows just what it was. Firstly, it wasnt underground, and it wasnt even a railroad. The term Underground Railroad actually comes from a runaway slave, who while being chased swam across a creek and was out of the owners sight. The owner said must have gone off on an underground railroad. That man was Tice Davids, a Kentucky slave who decided to live in freedom in 1831. The primary importance of the Underground Railroad was the on going fight to abolish slavery, the start of the civil war, and it was being one of our nations first major anti-slavery movements. We will write a custom essay on Underground Railroad Persuasive specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The history of the railroad is quite varied according to whom you are talking. Slavery in America thrived and continued to grow because there was a scarcity of labor. Cultivation of crops on plantations could be supervised while slaves used simple routines to harvest them, the low price at which slaves could be bought, and earning profits as a bonus for not having to pay hired work. Slaves turned to freedom for more than one reason. Some were obsessed with being free and living a life where they were not told how to live. Others ran due to fear of being separted or sold from friends and family. Then there were some who were treated so cruely, that it forced them to run just to stay alive. Since coming to America as slaves even back as far back as when the first colonies began, slaves wanted to escape. They wanted to get away from the situation they were forced into. Those who were free were the whites who were somewhat separated in values. The North, was a more industrialized area wh ere jobs were filled by newly imported immigrants, making them less dependent on slave labor. The South, however had rich fertile land mostly used for farming. Huge plantations were cleared and needed to be worked. The people of the area tended to be more genteal, and seemed not quite adjusted to hard work, but more of giving orders. The idea of telling people how to do their work just seemed to fit all too well into this scenario. The railroad didnt have a certain location. Slaves had been running since the 1500s on their own. When the idea caught on amoung brave slaves, was when it started. Slave owners in the South certainly werent happy about the loss of property. It seemed like too much money was being lost. This caused the South to pass the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. This titled slaves as property of their owners and gave permission to the owners to retrieve runaways any where in the states, even those states that were free. The North was angry about the treatment of the slaves and was not happy about owners being allowed to come into their states to take the slaves back. Finally, the North decided to do something about it. To return the fire thrown at them by the South, they would take away something that the North thought was morally wrong, and the Souths riches. They would help the slaves escape to freedom. The slaves were now angry, scared, and confused. Hearing of this Underground Railroad, they slowl y began to run, more and more. By 1807 a law was passed to make it illegal to import anymore slaves. Agricultural improvements came along, and with the limited number of slaves left in the states, the value of the slaves went up very quickly. Abolition Societies began to form, and along with religious groups became active in helpin gslaves to freedom. .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 , .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .postImageUrl , .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 , .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:hover , .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:visited , .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:active { border:0!important; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:active , .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55 .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u410ae3486cf104b5505fa8f3d8cd6d55:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Stereotyping EssayThe Railroad beggan to take shape. This made it all the easier for the helpers of the railroad to communicate going unoticed.Along the tracks, there were depots, safe houses to stay. These were houses of free whites or blacks w here they could hide when they werent running. The people who owned the houses were often called conductors. The conductors often left a number of signs for the slaves to follow so they didnt go to houses that belonged to allies of the slave owners. A quilt on the clothes line depicting a house with smoke coming out of the chimney was a sign of a safe station. A white ring of bricks around the the top of a houses chimney was another sign of a good hiding spot. Shoppes that were safe often had a silohette of a fleeing man or woman on in sign. Other siggns were used to guide the slaves. There were knocks that slaves used when approaching a house, animal calls, and lights hung in windows. When a slave was moving to the next house along the railroad, this was called catching the next train. There were also songgs that ave directions to slaves that were taught to everyone so that they might memorize the way. One such, was Follow the Drinking Gourd The drinking gourd was the slaves termino logy for the big dipper. The Big Dippers handle points to the north star, which they could use to find their way north. The song gave landmarks along the way to follow and a verse from it says the dead trees will show you the way. This was put in the song for a reason. The writer of this song, refered to as Peg-leg Joe, drew a picture of a peg legg on the dead trees along the track with charcoal. The following verse is Left foot, peg foot traveling on, accordingly. The tracks for the railroad werent exactly laid. A slave had many possible directions to run in, but the main idea here was safty over quickness. The slaves often zigzaged in their paths to avoid being caught. There were different forms of fleeing as well as different paths. Slaves could travel by water on boats. Often in one of the many clever disguises fabricated by the people of the North willing to lend a hand. Men were dressed as women, women were dressed as men, slaves clothes were exchanged for those of a rich fre e person of colors to confuse the true identity of the slave when seen by curious eyes. There were also some slaves that traveled the road, by foot, in a caridge, or in a wagon often containing a fake bottom making a tiny space where slaves could safely journey to freedom. Some traveled on surface linesthe actual railroads of this time. Lightly colored slaves were dressed as whites, and others were put in with the luggage and frieght. And yet dareing others traveled as baggage. Such a person was Henry Box Brown who recieved his nickname by making the long trip in a box marked this side up, and fragile. There are, however, reports from Henry, after he reached the end of the line, where he testified being turned upside down and was thrown about, which makes us all wonder what goes on with our mail service. .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 , .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .postImageUrl , .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 , .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:hover , .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:visited , .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:active { border:0!important; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:active , .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177 .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue14200f23121a715513507e8bdad9177:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dar Stamp Act EssayIn the end, slaves had to find a way to blend with the people of the North so that they might live their lives free. Some of the escaped fugitves met up with previuosly escaped friends and family and formed communities. Others found a haven in the Native Americans with whom they intermarried and reproduced. The civil war began and others found shelter with the Union Army. The slaves soon found out that freedom did not mean freedom from work, but they were happier because they now made their own decisions. Some died from exposure, after not finding shelter from the Norths frozen winter. Most slaves were not allowed to learn to read and remained illiterate . Their not being able to read or understand the fact that they had money of their own often lead cruel salesmen and employers to take advantage of the blacks. Those who learned to do specific jobs in the South often took up similar jobs in the North. The need for the railroad slowly began to decrease as the fight for abolishment grew stronger. It was no longer nesscary for the raliroad to be, since almost all the slaves who were going to run already had. The final motion that brought the railraod to its final stop was the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by Lincoln, ending all slavery in our now free country, forever.

Personal code of ethics

Personal code of ethics Free Online Research Papers Ethics are a personal code of behavior. They represent an ideal we strive toward because we presume that to achieve ethical behavior is both desired and honored. There is both personal and business ethics. I will describe my personal take on ethics along with experiences that I had working for Best Buy and the ethical dilemmas that I faced. My personal thought on ethics is that they require accountability. I think that people that are religious and people that are not religious may have two ways to look at this. If religious accountability of personal ethics is to God. For the people who are irreligious, like myself, we can ensure ethical behavior by the law, fear, or personal convictions. I believe that laws are guidelines that explain the expected behavior. Due to some people not having a â€Å"strong† sense of personal convictions the law is needed. The law to me is a set of ethical expectations that you must understand failure to understand them will result with consequences. For me my personal ethics are the key to living, finding friends and determining my own convictions. Personal ethics in a large way define who you are. The code of ethics that not only follow but feel are important for people I surround myself with are: Fairness Wholeness Reliability Consistency Respect Honesty Integrity Truth Telling Dependability Accountable These ten words describe to me what my personal code of ethics represent. We must have a right and wrong, a moral code. Most religions have a moral code of conduct, and most cultures have a minimum code of conduct also. In the case of society’s code of conduct, its laws, it is usually a-reflection of the moral values of a super majority of its population. Moral codes define our rights and wrongs. The combination, of determining right and wrong and being responsible for our actions, creates the standards for ethical behavior. Ethics are of special importance to professionals including retail managers. Retail employees have a great responsibility to the community with their jobs. People have everyday expectations when they go shopping and retail professionals need to have strong ethics. To understand why Best Buy’s ethics did not always match my personal code of ethics I will explain a few examples. Best Buy’s code of ethics is over fifty pages long so only select examples will be used. Knowing what is right and wrong may not always be simple. Most of the time, knowing the right thing to do is easy. Retail professionals, as I was, are often faced with many ethical decisions every day. Most often the ethically right answer is simple this involves being honest and upright. Knowing what the right thing to do is not always simple the responsibility of those around may not have been enough of a guide to guide you in the right direction. Ethics are very important to all business people. Yet, many neglect ethics as an important idea that has a major affect upon retail managers. Working at Best Buy the ethics that we were taught (also bolded on the fifth page of their ethics guide): UNLEASH THE POWER OF OUR PEOPLE LEARN FROM CHALLENGE AND CHANGE SHOW RESPECT HUMILITY AND INTEGRITY HAVE FUN WHILE BEING THE BEST Before explaining the corruptions in ethics at Best Buy I did want to explain a few things. Best Buy was a great company to work for. I believe that at the corporate level the company was solid in the ethics that they preached. The situations that I was put in was down to the store level when I was an operations manager in Phoenix. Ethics at Best Buy is determined by the supervisors that you have. I have worked for some people that were great with personal and business ethics. When I started work in Phoenix, AZ I worked for my store manager, Phil. The first thing that was done that I felt was beyond unethical is lying and manipulation. When I interviewed for this job via phone it was described as one of the best stores in the district that I was going to be going to. Explained the current financials to me along with the specific financials that I would be responsible for once I arrived. I was offered the job and moved to Phoenix 7 days later. When I went into the store I did what any good manager would do I pulled my financials so that I could â€Å"know† my business before I started coming up with plans for my team. Looking at the business I realized that the financials were no where near what had been explained. He stated that my store was ranked third in the territory. There are fifty-seven stores in our territory. My specific financials had placed me fifty-six out of fifty-seven stores. The ethical dilemma I find with this specific situation is that he lied. Part of there code of conduct is integrity to be a person of integrity you do not lie. In a position that he was in it was not his personal ethics that I am looking at. I am looking at the ethics that Best Buy has put into place and expecting you to follow. That is one dilemma that was really based on lying. I will explain another dilemma that I was forced to face with on multiple occasions. That would be the magazine scam. Have you ever walked into a Best Buy and heard the cashier offer you magazines. â€Å"With your purchase today you get eight risk free issues of one of our magazines which would you like?† This offer was one that we dealt with when I worked in the Green Bay store a lot. How much information was ethically enough and how little information made the practice too unethical? In the end we determined not to offer magazines in Wisconsin because of the ethical problems we were faced with. When I moved to Phoenix as their operations manager they explained how I would have to offer magazines again with my team. I knew that magazines were a problem with my own personal ethics lying, not truthful and not being fair to the customer. I started observing what there presentations to customers were and I could not believe what I saw. There offer was nonexistent but customers were still getting signed up. If a customer would pay with a credit card they would scan for the magazines and have the customers sign twice; once for the purchase and once to accept the magazines. I called around to a couple of the other operations managers and they explained how this was a â€Å"best practice† in the area and it was fine. This may have been a best practice to them but not in my book. I ceased that offer immediately part of my thought process is that if we were already ranked so low there is nothing that we could loose. We would never reach the store with the most traffic to, in my eyes, â€Å"Scam the customer.† I stood my ground and got a lot of pressure from a lot of different people for this matter from store manager to my territory operations manager. In the end I used resources I had gained from my previous work in the midwestern territory to explain my situation and explain why I felt that it was wrong. The ethics team from our corporate office started doing inspections in my area. In the end we still had to offer magazines but the right way. The way that felt good to me with my own personal ethics. In the end ethics shape you, your community and your business. I have a personal code of ethics that I follow. My ethics are very simple and to the point but they work for me. Every person on earth has their own personal ethics there is not one person that is the same. So what are ethics, and what constitutes ethical behavior? That depends, to some degree, on the person answering the question. Organizations also demonstrate the standard of ethics (or lack thereof) held by those shaping the culture of the business. Best Buy had an ethics manual but it is difficult to force all employees to follow one specific manual. The same with people there are many ways that I have shared that I believe community helps with keeping ethics in check. Teacher Professionalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Teacher Professionalism - Essay Example Frpm this research it is clear that when she asked Mario if he understood the corrections, she displayed what reflects the 3rd Feature laid by the MELS which expresses that teachers must â€Å"judge how well the student has read the problem situation.† These two features in the 5th Competency would mean that the MELS notion of the role of teacher not only comprises instruction, but also the social aspect. It is clear then that teachers should motivate and inspire the students in order for the teaching and learning process to be more effective. This will equate to a turnaround of the traditional means of evaluation for the teacher, thus bringing about a reformative process of the professional conduct in schools. This study presents that in the reporter's ongoing professional development as a teacher, I observed and now comprehend that the conduct of my skilled CT is professional and that she is a very caring individual. She gave the student a chance after recognizing that indeed he understood what were his mistakes. This correlates slightly with the other features under the 5th Competency which is similarly grounded on the idea of evaluating the student progress on a standpoint of socio-constructivism.  This situation introduced him to the standard of teaching where the virtues of compassion and understanding are instilled. It is worthy of emulation!   the importance of a teacher being supportive in giving encouragement and building a positive self-image for the student.
